Discipleship Committee

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus told his disciples to go into the whole world to make disciples, to baptize new believers, and to teach them to be obedient to the truths he taught them.  Each Christian should be a disciple of Christ.  Here at FBC, the Discipleship program has two components: follow-up and discipleship.

The follow-up program is for new believers or long-time church-goers who never received a basic grounding in their walk with God. This program covers  the basic doctrines of the Bible (such as salvation, God, Christ, Holy Spirit, the Bible, sin, church, and baptism), as well as spiritual disciplines (including church attendance, prayer, memorizing verses, and regular Bible reading).

The discipleship program is for believers who know the basic doctrines and spiritual disciplines, but desire to have deeper spiritual challenges in their lives. Emphases are on Bible study, accountability, evangelism, leadership, and equipping to multiply.

Goals of Discipleship

Our desire is to help young believers mature in their faith, progressing from one phase in their spiritual walk to the next:
1) Assurance: Understand what it means to be secure in Christ, what their  eternal destination (heaven) is like, and what Christ's sacrifice on the cross cost.
2) Consistency: Develop basic Godly habits such as actively participating in church, studying the Bible, and interacting with other Christians.
3) Stability: Develop Godly habits that will lead to personal growth. These habits include devotions, prayer, Bible reading and sharing Christ with others.
4) Christ-likeness: Become more like Jesus Christ each day in word and deed.
5) Independence: Faithfully follow Christ, even in the presence of peer and cultural pressure to abandon the faith.
6) Reproduction: Ability to share their faith with others, and help other less mature believers develop a mature relationship in Christ.
