Prayer Letter

July & August 2010

Dear praying friends,

We are thanking the Lord for a profitable summer. We were blessed to be able to visit with several missionaries who are on furlough as well as get settled into our new home. We also took a few trips to the coast to enjoy the beautiful beach and ocean. While we missed traveling out west and visiting with friends and family we are thankful that God uses all things for His intended purpose.

Since Alton took off time from the maintenance work at NTM’s home office in the spring to fix up our house, he was able to fill in the gap when the team was much smaller during the summer months. The team was able to complete the first 100 windows of the modernization project on the largest building. The new windows are wonderful! But pulling out the old ones requires significant effort and sometimes making new frames so everything is square. I’m thankful that Alton and the guys working are diligent in spite of the heat to pay attention to detail on these projects.

Because we have been home this summer, we were able to continue meeting with the “MKs and Friends” youth each Friday. This is our first time going through the “Firm Foundations” series in English other than with our children some years ago. Please pray that the new students will be able to gain an understanding of how God’s plan has unfolded since before time began. We would also appreciate prayer for the long-term students as God’s truth is solidified in their lives and that they will be able to share Christ with their friends and family.

We were blessed with a little “Christmas in July” and are taking a trip to Kansas to attend a family reunion with my mom’s side of the family and visit friends there. Due to one cousin’s military schedule, the reunion is actually set for the first day of school, so our kids get an extra couple of days of summer vacation. I would appreciate prayer that I would have a chance to visit with my brother as well. He is somewhat all alone in the world. We haven’t seen him since 2005.

We continue to hear exciting and challenging things from Papua New Guinea. As God’s word goes forth in one area and is greeted with rejoicing, other people groups have mixed responses. We heard a good report that James, the Manam believer who is able to teach, is continuing to meet together with a small group of people. Please pray for understanding as he is working with materials in Melanesian Pidgin and English.

We would also like to ask you to pray for our dear friends and mentors, John and Lynne White. They were our first co-workers in the Gimi people group in the mountains of Papua New Guinea in 1989. John has continued to minister in PNG while living with cancer for a number of years but was not able to return to PNG this summer after furlough. He just had surgery so that he can receive nutrition from his food. John and Lynne need grace and patience during the recovery process. We are so thankful for the faithful example of this couple!

Hebrews 12:1,2 says “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of ourfaith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

As we study through the Old Testament again, we are reminded that God doesn’t use those who are perfect, but enables each one who is willing and believing. God’s hall of fame includes those faithful with the hand to the plow at home and those who venture into new territory. Thank you for your part in the Body of Christ.

Running by faith,

Alton & Cheryl
